American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Instructor Course

The American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Instructor Course is designed to train individuals to teach AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) provider courses. This program equips candidates with the skills to effectively instruct and evaluate students in CPR and emergency cardiovascular care following AHA guidelines.

Course Prerequisites:

To enroll in the AHA BLS Instructor Course, candidates must:

  1. Hold a current AHA BLS Provider certification (must be valid at the time of the course).
  2. Be aligned with an AHA Training Center (TC) that will mentor and monitor their instructor activities.
  3. Complete the Instructor Essentials Course (an online module that must be completed before attending the in-person session). Once your application is reviewed/accepted, you will need to purchase the online portion (not included in the registration fee below) and bring your certificate of completion to the in-person session on January 16th.
  4. Submit an instructor candidate application (as required by the affiliated Training Center). (please fill out the first two sections of the Instructor Candidate Application and email to kelly.gruver@sinclair.edu and cc workforcedevelopment@sinclair.edu - your application will be reviewed and you will be contacted on your status prior to your card being charged for the course). Course Components:

  1. Instructor Essentials Online Course
    • Self-paced online training covering AHA policies, adult learning principles, and best teaching practices.
    • Must be completed before attending the in-person course.
       
  2. Classroom Instructor Training (In-Person)
  • Roles & Responsibilities: Understanding the duties of an AHA BLS Instructor.
  • Course Delivery: Learning how to teach BLS courses using AHA materials and hands-on practice.
  • Student Assessment: Evaluating student performance and providing feedback.
  • AHA Policies & Procedures: Covering compliance, certification issuance, and record-keeping.
  • Completion of BLS Instructor Essentials Exam
     
  1. Monitoring & Certification
    • After completing the classroom portion, instructor candidates must teach a BLS course under the supervision of an AHA Training Center Faculty within 3 months to demonstrate competency.
    • Upon successful evaluation, the candidate will receive an AHA BLS Instructor Certification (valid for two years) along with an updated provider eCard.

Responsibilities After Certification:

  • Teach four BLS courses every two years following AHA guidelines.
  • Maintain alignment with an AHA Training Center.
  • Keep instructor certification current through teaching activity and renewal courses.
